One of the things I enjoy most about cycling is that it often brings me to places I never originally planned to visit. Tonight was exactly one of those moments.

I was cycling as usual, expecting to follow my normal route, but because of the ongoing road construction and some obstructions along the way, I ended up being diverted toward Balestier Road instead. Since I had no dinner plan in mind and was already starting to feel hungry, I decided to just go with the flow and see what I could find.
That was how I ended up at Mega Foodcourt.

From the outside, the place looked alive enough to still be open, so I took that as a good sign and stopped by for what I like to call a little “refueling.” Not fuel for the bike of course, but fuel for myself. Cycling burns a lot of calories, and I always like to think of food after a ride as a proper refill for the body. After all, what is the point of working up a good appetite if you do not reward yourself with something satisfying afterward?

Luckily for night riders like me, Mega Foodcourt operates 24 hours, which honestly makes it such a convenient discovery. Places like this are a blessing when you are out late and suddenly realize you need something warm, filling, and easy. There is something comforting about finding a food spot that is still serving people long after most other places have already shut down for the night.

Since I did not want to eat anything too heavy, I decided to go for the fishball noodle stall. My thinking was simple: after cycling, I wanted something light enough that it would not make me feel overly full, but still satisfying enough to count as dinner. So I ordered the Minced Meat Noodle, which to me is one of the simplest but most reliable choices when I am in this kind of mood.
There was, however, one small mistake.
I forgot to mention that I wanted the small serving, so the stall owner ended up preparing the bigger portion instead. That brought the price to SGD 5.20. At first I thought it would be fine, since in my head it did not sound like it would be too much. But when the bowl arrived, I immediately realized it was a lot more generous than I had expected. Still, I was not upset about it. In fact, I quickly convinced myself that more food is better anyway, especially after a long ride.

And honestly, I really enjoyed it.
What I liked most about this bowl was the noodle texture. This style of noodle is one of my favorites because it is thin, springy, and nicely al dente. It had just the firmness I was looking for, and every strand was coated beautifully with the sauce. Even though this version came without chili, which made it much simpler than the usual style, it still had enough flavor to keep it interesting. Sometimes a simpler version works very well, especially when all you want is something comforting and easy to enjoy.
The toppings also made the bowl feel more complete. There were slices of fish cake, minced meat, mushrooms, and a meatball in the soup on the side, which gave the meal more variety in texture and taste. I liked how the noodles absorbed the flavor from both the sauce and the toppings, making every bite savory and satisfying without being too rich.
This is exactly the kind of meal I appreciate after cycling. It is simple, comforting, and affordable, yet still feels complete enough to hit the spot. It may not be the fanciest dinner, but sometimes those accidental food discoveries turn out to be the most memorable ones.
So even though I ended up on Balestier Road by chance, I am glad the detour happened. Mega Foodcourt turned out to be a very welcome stop, and this bowl of minced meat noodle was exactly the kind of no-fuss comfort food I needed tonight. I will surely come back again for this unexpected supper find.
Bon appétit.
