Charcoal Comfort in the Heartlands... A Sunday Roast Duck Feast at Khatib

in #food18 hours ago

Last Sunday was one of those “walk until you’re hungry enough to eat anything” kind of days, and honestly, I love days like that. I started my morning with some wanderings at Mandai Boardwalk (fresh air + slow stroll = instant reset), and after that, I hopped onto the shuttle bus back to Khatib MRT station. I haven’t really explored the Khatib area before, so I told myself: okay, let’s make this a mini food adventure. It’s mostly residential, right? But that also means there should be hidden gems… somewhere.

And wow, Khatib surprised me. The area felt alive, especially on a Sunday. There was this busy neighborhood energy that reminded me of those classic heartland scenes you get in places like Tampines, Bishan, or Bukit Gombak. Not in a flashy way, but in a comforting, nostalgic way. People strolling around in slippers, families doing grocery runs, aunties chatting, the whole “old neighborhood” vibe that makes you feel like Singapore is still very… Singapore.

Now, finding a hawker food centre for lunch was a bit of a challenge at first because there are quite a lot of small hawkers scattered around. It’s not like you see one obvious giant food hub immediately. I was basically walking with the hunger guiding me, LOL. Then I spotted GHK @ Khatib, and the real reason I walked straight in was because of one stall’s signage that basically screamed for attention.

Hao You Ji Charcoal Roasted Duck and Meat.

First of all… the branding is loud in the best way. The blazing red theme is super eye-catching, very well-lit, and honestly perfect for catching the attention of someone who was already hungry and losing patience. The words “charcoal roasted” also instantly got me curious because charcoal roasting just sounds more intense, more fragrant, more worth it. Like, if I’m going to eat roasted meat, I want it to feel like a proper treat.

So I ordered the Combination Roasted Duck & Char Siew with Rice, priced at SGD 6.00. And for that price? Not bad at all, actually I’d say it’s pretty good value, especially after I saw what came with it.

Because… they served a complimentary soup that wasn’t some sad, watery afterthought. This soup was warm, comforting, and tasted like it could stand on its own as a dish. There were duck wings and duck feet inside too (yes, free extra duck parts, I was pleasantly surprised). And they were generous with the salted vegetables, which is such a smart pairing because it cuts through the richness of roasted meat. That salty, slightly tangy crunch makes the whole meal feel less “heavy” and more balanced.

Then let’s talk about the main star: the roasted meats.

The roasted duck was really satisfying, you can tell it’s roasted properly, with that deeper, roasted aroma that feels more fragrant than the usual. The meat was juicy enough, and the skin had that darker roasted character that made every bite feel “worth it.” As for the char siew, it had that nice sweetness (the kind that makes you happy), and it was tender too. When you mix both meats together with rice, and then you alternate with a spoon of soup in between… honestly, it becomes a very complete meal.

Overall, this lunch was such a solid Khatib discovery for me. Perfectly roasted meat, a complimentary soup that tastes like a proper side dish, and that heartland Sunday vibe that makes everything feel extra comforting, more than enough reason for me to recommend this stall. I’ll surely come back again LOL.
