Mini Steamboat Night... A Long-Overdue Comfort Meal (SGD 7.00?!)

in #food4 days ago

This dinner has been long overdue.

I’ve been eyeing the Mini Steam Boat for the longest time, but I kept pushing it back, partly because I wanted the “right” moment, and partly because I didn’t want to end up sweating through a bowl of soup in Singapore weather. But tonight? The air felt cooler, the city mood was calmer, and suddenly warm soup wasn’t just an option… it was the best option.

So yes, I finally did it: the Mini Steam Boat experience.

And let me be clear, this isn’t the kind of “steam boat” that pretends to be one (you know, the ones that are basically soup with a fancy name). This is the real deal. It came in a proper metal pot with that iconic chimney-like center, bubbling away like it meant business. The kind of dish that instantly makes you slow down and respect the heat in front of you.

For SGD 7.00, I genuinely don’t know how the stall owner is making money. I’m not even exaggerating, when the pot arrived, I stared at it like, wait… this is mine? The serving was generous to the point where it felt underpriced, and the ingredients looked fresh enough that I started wondering if I accidentally ordered an upgrade.

The pot was loaded with big prawns, plenty of fish slices, tofu cubes, and a really satisfying amount of vegetables. It wasn’t just “some greens for decoration” either, the vegetables actually mattered here. They softened in the soup, soaked up the flavor, and added that comforting sweetness that balances seafood so well. I also loved the darker bits (seaweed-ish vibes) floating around the surface, those gave the broth a deeper, slightly oceanic backbone without tasting heavy.

Now let’s talk soup.

I like that the broth didn’t try too hard. It had a subtle, refreshing flavor, but what really stood out was the ginger. Strong ginger. The kind that warms your chest a little and makes seafood taste cleaner and brighter. Ginger and seafood is already a perfect pairing, but here it felt especially intentional, like the soup was designed to be comforting and light at the same time.

And because it’s a mini steamboat, please take note: this isn’t “warm soup.” This can be scorching hot if you get excited and sip too fast. Steam boat is the kind of meal that demands patience. You wait, you stir, you breathe in the aroma, and you take small sips like you’re learning a life lesson. 😂

I paired mine with rice (because honestly, rice + soup is such a classic comfort combo), and there was also a small dipping sauce on the side. I liked switching between “pure broth taste” and “dip-and-eat mode.” The prawns were sweet and firm, and the fish slices were soft without falling apart, exactly how you want them in a soup like this.

Overall, this was such a good find that I’m confidently putting it on my top 10 list. Not just because it’s delicious, but because it’s one of those meals that feels like value + comfort + freshness all in one pot.

If you’ve been delaying this dish like I did, consider this your sign. Go when the weather is cool, come hungry, and treat that first sip with respect.

Hope you guys are enjoying your dinner too. Bon appetit!

Exactly! That’s why this one surprised me… SGD 7 felt like a steal 😄

This looks so nice and warming. 7 dollars is crazy value man! Good to always have a nice comfort meal too.

Exactly… warm, comforting, and crazy value. One of those meals that just hits right.

Thanks for stopping by! 🙏 Appreciate the read.

Great pricing. It never ceases to amaze me that Singapore has such "subsidised" food prices in our hawker centres. 🤣 I can barely find the equivalent anywhere else in the developed world.

Totally agree 😂 Singapore hawker pricing feels unreal compared to most developed cities.

This mini steamboat looks good at a very good price. In the Toronto area, that would go more for than 7 SGD for sure. (1 SGD is almost the same as 1 CAD).

Yeah, definitely 😅 at that price overseas it would be way more… hawker food here is special.
