When Cravings Win... My Tonkatsu Curry Rice Dinner

in #food5 days ago

I was actually supposed to post this last night, but I was feeling too tired and a little unwell, so I decided to just rest instead. Sometimes I get that kind of exhaustion where even food and medicine do not seem to fix it right away. The only thing that really works is getting more sleep than usual, and thankfully that usually helps me feel much better afterwards. Even so, one thing that never really disappears is the craving for something satisfying, and if you have been following my food blogs for a while, then you probably already know that I usually give in to my cravings anyway LOL.

So what did I end up choosing for dinner? Japanese curry.

This is not something I eat very often, but whenever I do crave it, there is one place that immediately comes to mind for me, and that is Food Republic. For me, this food spot has always been one of the better places to go when I want something comforting, satisfying, and still worth the price. Last night’s dinner was exactly that. I ordered the Tonkatsu Curry Rice, which was priced at SGD 8.30, and it turned out to be a very solid dinner choice.

Usually, I tend to go for the chicken version whenever I order curry rice, especially katsu curry rice. But since I had already eaten chicken during lunch, I decided to switch things up a little and go for the pork version instead. I think that was a good decision because it gave me a bit more variety for the day while still satisfying the craving I had in mind.

One thing I really like about this dish is the portion size. It is properly filling and definitely does not leave me feeling shortchanged. The tonkatsu itself never disappoints when it comes to size. You can really tell just by comparing it with the plate. The plate is already quite large, almost a foot in diameter, so that gives a good idea of how generous the cutlet is. It looked substantial the moment it was served, and I already knew I was in for a satisfying meal.

The tonkatsu had that lovely golden-brown crust on the outside, which made it look very inviting. When sliced, the meat inside still looked nicely thick, and that is always something I appreciate with this kind of dish. A good tonkatsu should feel hearty, and this one definitely did. The curry sauce was also very generous, which is something I always enjoy because I like having enough sauce for both the cutlet and the rice. It made the whole plate feel extra rich and comforting.

The curry itself was saucy, smooth, and tasty, with enough flavor to keep every bite interesting. I liked dipping the tonkatsu into the curry before eating it, and of course I also made sure to spoon plenty of that sauce over the rice. That is honestly one of the best parts of Japanese curry rice for me. It is such a simple dish, but when the curry is good and the portion is generous, it becomes incredibly comforting.

To go with the meal, I decided to add a drink that would bring a little variety to the overall taste. Since the curry rice was rich and savory, I wanted something slightly sweet and refreshing on the side. I ended up getting a fruit juice made from apple, beetroot, and carrot, which cost SGD 4.80. I thought that was a nice combination because it gave the meal a fresher and lighter element. It also made me feel like I was balancing out the indulgence of the curry with something a bit healthier.

In total, I spent around SGD 13 for this dinner, and honestly, I think that is quite reasonable for a meal that felt both satisfying and somewhat balanced. I got a hearty plate of Japanese curry rice, a refreshing fruit juice, and a dinner that truly hit the spot after a tiring day.

Overall, I really enjoyed this meal. It was comforting, filling, and exactly the kind of dinner I needed that evening. Sometimes when I am feeling low on energy, a satisfying plate of curry really does help lift the mood a little.

Bon appétit.
