Sometimes, I find myself in that in-between zone where I'm not craving anything specific. When that happens, my go-to is always a mixed veggie rice stall, a reliable choice for a satisfying and budget-friendly meal. With so many food centers offering this option, I know I'll easily find something that hits the spot for lunch.
This time, I decided to check out Yong Fa Eating House, and let me tell you, the braised pig trotter immediately caught my eye.
I couldn’t resist! I paired it with some sautéed vegetables, and the whole meal set me back just $4.50, a steal, especially for a pig trotter dish!
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the dish, especially considering the price. While it might not be the best pig trotter I've ever had, it was definitely good and cooked just right. The highlight for me was the skin, gelatinous and slightly chewy, exactly the texture I love in this type of dish. The flavor was all about the sauce, a rich blend of dark soy sauce and aromatic herbs like star anise.
The sautéed veggies I picked were a perfect match, too. They complemented the pig trotter beautifully, with the flavors blending together in every bite.
What really sealed the deal for me was the unexpected bonus, a fried egg on the side!
How they manage to keep the cost so low is beyond me, but I'm not complaining. With such great value, I’ll definitely be back to explore more of their menu.
And to top it all off, I treated myself to a refreshing soy milk with pearls, which made the meal feel complete and very satisfying.
