Food p**n - home made healthy granola

in #foodies25 days ago

Not my usual kind of post, but if I recall correctly @karinxxl asked me about it a while ago, and since she makes awesome mouth-watering posts about food, feels more than fair to share my go-to recipe for making granola. So, especially for her, this is how I usually do it!

There are already a lot of pretty decent quality granola that you can buy nowadays, but home-made granola is really easy to make, it's a lot cheaper, and it's definitely healthier than most commercial brands on the supermarket shelves.

So, what do you need?

  • Cereals: I usually use oats, feels the most healthier option; ideally, whole oats
  • Seeds: I've used linseeds and sunflower seeds
  • dry fruits: almonds and nuts are my usual go-to
  • something to sweeten the mix
  • a tiny bit of fat
  • whatever extra/special ingredient you can think of

All the ingredients here are just suggestions; you can use whatever cereals, dry fruits and seed you like the most: go wild!

As for proportions, and again, nothing too rigid: 3 cups cereals, 1 cup dry fruits, 1/2 a cup of seeds, 1/4 cup of the sweet stuff, a table spoon of fat... and whatever you want to add to the mix.

Let's get started!
First, get a recipient and start to add stuff:

Oats first, and the off to the dried fruits; I normally blend them a little bit first.

Next, the seeds:

Mix everything a little bit...

And then time to start adding the liquid stuff. For the fat, I use coconut oil; now in the summer, it's basically liquid, when it's not I just microwave it for a few seconds.

Sweet stuff coming up! You can use only one source; I like to use honey, but since I was almost running out of honey, I used coconut sugar also.

This time, I also added just a little bit of ginger, for that extra flavour.

There you go, we have everything that we need! Now, mix everything really well; and then, place it as an uniform layer in a oven tray.

Place the tray in the overn for around 15 minutes, you can stirr it once or twice (also to make sure you're not burning everything!)...

... and voilá! Congratulations, your granola is ready!

From here, you mix everything again, and place it on a well sealed jar. These quantities are enough for a ton of meals, and the granola easily lasts for weeks if the jar is sealed tight.

My favourite way of using it? With a good youghurt and fruit, for a healthy and very easy to make breakfast!

There are countless websites with great healthy granola recipes; this was likely the first one I've tried, and I loved the general guidelines that make it so easy to do. Besides, since it tasted so great... no changing the winning team, right? :)

Enjoy!

Good morning, J!

What a cool and simple recipe! I think I'll buy the ingredients and try making it at home. I haven't eaten granola in a long time, mainly because the commercial ones are full of sugar, but your recipe seems well balanced. If you need honey, I have a supplier in Beira Baixa! He's my co-worker. He and his brother produce it. I have a jar of rosemary honey from Sertã at home. Would you like me to bring it to you?

I have enough honey now again, but definitely interested in that dealer. And do try the recipe, easy peasy and great for a healthy meal!

Talk about mouth watering here. This looks awesome! I usually buy my granola on the market here, but damn that aint cheap.

And this is cool to experiment and make some variety in it, although you aren't doing that hahaha.

Good one and awesome reminder!!

Yep, kept it as simple as it gets! The original recipe was with corn gelly, but honey feels a little healthier to me.

Wow that looks really sweet!! :)

And it tastes just as good!

Everything cooked at home is good for our health because we know that we have used good quality ingredients in it. It looks much more delicious. I also feel like eating it.

Try it!

Sure.
