It’s been a while since I had good Western food, so now that I’m craving it, I’m more than willing to indulge myself. As I was passing through the Kallang area, I decided to check out a nearby hawker centre and found a great spot for dinner.
The stall offered a full range of Western dishes—but with a twist: you could have them with white rice or fried rice instead of the usual fries. That kind of flexibility really appeals to me, since most Western food stalls only serve dishes with fries by default.
I do like fries, but I’ve already been eating too many fried foods lately. So, I asked the stall owner if they could serve the pork chop with rice instead of fries. At first, they were reluctant and kept telling me to stick to the menu. It took a few tries to convince them to make the switch—but eventually, they agreed and charged me the usual price. I didn’t mind too much, even though I felt a little shortchanged. Still, I wasn’t in the mood for fries, so I just let it go and enjoyed my meal.
Regardless of the sides, I think the highlight of this dish is the pork chop itself. It was perfectly grilled, and that’s what really makes it stand out for me. It’s all I need to satisfy my cravings.
Usually, pork chops can turn out tough when they’re overcooked—but not at this stall. The timing was just right, making the meat tender and juicy. What impressed me even more was that the pork chop was thicker than those served at stalls I previously thought were offering good-quality food.
Overall, this unexpected find at the Kallang hawker centre turned out to be a satisfying experience. The perfectly grilled pork chop and the option to swap fries for rice made it a standout meal. I’ll definitely be coming back the next time I’m craving hearty, no-frills Western food with a local twist.
