Ogbono is a delicious Nigerian soup that is made from ogbono seeds and it is very easy to prepare. However, there is a twist to this recipe I will be sharing with you. The twist is that we will be adding okra to the soup for extra slimeness. Ogbono is in the same category of slimy soups with okra and jute soup.

Also, in this recipe one of the most important ingredient is palm oil. I will be mixing the palm oil with the blended ogbono to make a paste before adding it to the scotch bonnet and stock mixture. Also, I will be making use of ugwu leaves at the finsihing of the soup.

Ogbono and Okra soup is a soup that can be accompanied with any swallow of choice such as pounded yam, semovita, eba, fufu and so on.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of blended ogbono seeds

  • 15 pieces of Okra

  • 3 scotch bonnet

  • 2 onion

  • ⅓ cup of palm oil

  • 4 seasoning cubes

  • Ugu leaves
    1000130124.jpg

  • Salt to taste
    1000130127.jpg

  • Meats
    1000130971.jpg

  • ½ tbsp of curry
    1000130986.jpg

  • ½ tbsp of thyme
    1000130207.jpg

  • 2 opei balls

Step by Step

  • Note that the meat I will be using for this soup has been pre-cooked, so we will be skipping that step.

  • We will start by blending the scotch bonnet and onions together. Set aside.

  • The next thing I did was to wash the okra carefully and cut into tiny pieces. Then blend using your blender. You may also decide to grate or slice it into round or irregular shapes. Set aside.

  • In a pot, add the pepper mix and add your already cooked meat to soften the more. Add seasoning cubes, curry, thyme, opei and of course salt to taste. Allow to cook for about 20 minutes.

  • While it is cooking, in a bowl mix your blended ogbono with palm oil and mix thoroughly till it turns into a paste.
    1000130998.jpg

  • Next turn the paste into the boiling pot and allow to cook for about 5-10 minutes on low heat.

  • After about 10 minutes add in your blended okra and allow to cook for another 5 minutes.
    1000131022.jpg

  • Then add your already washed and sliced ugwu leave.
    1000131023.jpg

  • Leave to simmmer for another 2 minutes.

  • Your ogbono and okra soup is ready.

  • Serve with your preferred swallow.
