Kilishi is a big deal in the northern states of Nigeria, and Abuja, the Federal government Capital is not an exception. It is one of those snacks that is loved by many especially if you love it spicy. For Nigerians in diaspora, Kilishi is a must-buy whenever they are back home for vacations. They are also sure to stock up some when they are returning to their base. But, you know they say nothing lasts forever? After a few months, when the ones they took with them has finished and the cravings return, that's when the calls and messages keep hitting your phone to make some purchases for them.

So, I got a call from a friend in the UK who is seriously craving some kilishi but have limited access to it. I say limited access because there are kilishi sellers in the UK, of course, but it will be very expensive and he may not get good value for his money because these people also buy from Nigeria to resell.

Are you wondering what kilishi is? Kilishi is a spicy dried meat snack that originates from Northern Nigeria and it is made from beef or goat meat that is thinly sliced (I even heard there is chicken kilishi), then coated with a mix of groundnut, pepper, garlic, ginger, pepper, salt and other spices. Then it is sun-dried and afterwards it can be grilled.

Kilishi production is changing gradually with the interest of the "new school" in the business. A typical kilishi is produced in an environment that does not tick all the hygiene boxes. Like I said earlier, sun drying is an integral part of the production and often times you see flies hovering around; no gloves is in sight and so on. Well, that is how it is been done for some years and many of us comsune it. However, some individuals see that void and they wish to fill it. They are gradually taking over the market to solve these hygiene concerns. They now observe proper hygienic procedures like the use of gloves, use of ovens, and so on.

Now, back to the errand. The kilishi market I buy from is quite far from my place. It takes about 45 minutes drive so I had to use a stone to kill two birds by waiting until the day I had another business around the area so I can save transportation cost and also avoid unnecessary stress.

I had to wait for about 25 minutes because I met his absence. I had to wait for that long for his return for some reasons which include the fact that he's neat and I also get good deals from him. More importantly is that our communication is smooth and seamless because he speaks English. Most kilishi sellers are Northerners and they mostly communicate in their dialect and I don't understand it very well.

So, I bought about 7kg and each kilogram costs #23,000 ($17). It is easy to buy since i located this spot because in my former spot I would select a range of kilishi and they will tell me the price of each of them and I begin to negotiate. But with a standard price of kilogram it is straightforward to purchase.

At the end of it all, the kilishi run was a success. I was able to send it to him through my husband's company who runs a cargo/shipping company.

Thanks for reading and see you in my next one.
