In recent times, there is a little sigh of relief in relation to the costs of some food items in my local market in Abuja. (Please share in the comment section if it is the same in your neighbourhood). The last time I went to the market for general shopping I observed that some food are now more affordable than they use to be few weeks/months back. The notable ones is the price of irish potatoes, garri and beans. I bought a basket of irish potatoes for #4,500 ($3 USD), a price that felt so unbelievable compared to what it used to cost just a few weeks/months back.

It got to point earlier this year when Irish potatoes were so expensive that I had to reduce the quantity I purchase to the barest minimum. As much as it is a favourite in my home, it wasn't making sense financially to keep buying in large quantities as we used to. But now that the price is low, they have made a full return back into my kitchen and I'm going to sure enjoy it as long as it last.

One of the reason I'm elated about the price drop is not only about how much we love it but also because it takes away the stress of thinking about my son's breakfast or lunch to school. Anyone who is saddled with the responsibility of packing school meals knows that morning rush is no joke. It is not always easy trying to come up with a quick, and nutritious meal for your kids especially if you don't have many options. So, having these potatoes back means I have more options to choose from aside from bread, rice, noodles, and spaghetti and the likes.

Here's a quick recipe of making some crispy French fries using irish potatoes that both kids and adults can never resist.

Ingredients

  • Fresh Irish potatoes
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Vegetable oil

Step by Step

  • Start by washing and peeling your potatoes.

  • Next, slice them into thin long strips.

  • Next, place them in a sieve and allow them dry before you sprinke salt on them and mix together.

  • Next, in a frying pan placed on medium heat add some vegetable oil and allow it to heat up.

  • Then fry the potatoes in batches until they are crispy brown.

  • You can drain the oil using paper or sieve.

  • Then it ready to be served.

  • Enjoy with some fried/grilled chicken, scrambled/fried eggs, ketchup, mayonnaise, coleslaw and so on.

Hi @pinina. Thanks for your comment

I don't know how much a basket of potatoes costs, but a kilo here is around €0.50.

Most times, food items are sold in kilos in supermarkets or malls here but in an open market they are in portions or baskets.
