Many of the recipes I looked at mentioned a tot of rum, which I guess is not too out of the ordinary, as sherry trifle was a bit of a 70s staple in the UK and it's along similar lines.
As a small kid, I remember some of my relatives were devout Methodists. Subsequently, the trifle at their house never had any alcohol in and my dad always used to tease them about it.
