May 20th has gradually become a special day for many people in recent years because “520” sounds like “I love you” in Chinese. Because of that, lots of couples choose this day to go on dates, give gifts, confess their feelings, or even register their marriages. Of course, businesses have also noticed the opportunity — or rather, created one — by launching all kinds of 520 promotional campaigns to attract customers.
Even Pizza Hut, which I often buy from, had a promotion. If you spent NT$189, you could get NT$50 off. A deal like that is too good to pass up, so I made some time to pick up a pizza. When I arrived at the branch where I usually get takeout, I noticed the store had already piled up a lot of orders. Many finished pizzas were waiting for delivery drivers to pick them up, and the staff were constantly rushing around handling takeout customers. It seemed that plenty of people besides me were also taking advantage of the deal.
I ordered Pizza Hut’s new flavor, the Tropical Pineapple Seafood Supreme. Even though Mother’s Day was already last week, the pizza still came in a Mother’s Day themed box, which felt kind of random, haha. I guess the store wanted to make full use of the leftover boxes. When I opened it, the pizza was covered with shrimp, squid, and sweet-and-sour pineapple, topped with tomato sauce and salad dressing. It looked pretty appetizing. The freshly baked crust was crispy with a satisfying crunch, and overall, it tasted pretty good.
Overall, I think 520 is a pretty interesting day. It’s not a traditional holiday like the Qixi Festival. Instead, it’s a modern type of celebration born from the combination of internet culture and commercial marketing. In a way, it also reflects how much modern people value emotional expression and a sense of occasion. Still, holidays like this can feel a bit too commercialized sometimes. So, how did you spend your May 20th this year?
