初嚐人氣燒餅 / Trying a popular flatbread for the first time

這家五十多年的排隊老店,只賣六項商品,計有招牌蔥花燒餅、韭菜盒子、韭菜煎包、牛肉餡餅、鮮肉鍋貼、冰豆漿,品項不多,不過,每次我經過時,都會看到排隊的人龍,讓我心中充滿著期待,但是我實在是太討厭排隊了,所以,一直沒機會品嚐這家應該不錯的美食。

某天經過時,我發現居然只要等個幾分鐘,就可以拿到餐點,於是就算不太餓,也要買些東西,試試味道,當下店家只有蔥花燒餅,那就拿了幾個,它的燒餅是採用鐵板乾烙的方式現作的,製作的過程,就在大家的手眼下,衛生看的到,香氣聞的到,難怪飄香五十多年,屹立不搖。

當我把燒餅撕開的那一刻,麵體的氣孔並不多,看起來少了那種層層堆疊、酥鬆分明的結構,反而比較緊實,蔥給的份量算是大方的,但整體味道,我覺得普普通通,達不到讓人驚艷的程度,吃完後,我有種說不上來的落差感,因為沒有任何突出的記憶點。

其實這樣的經驗也不是第一次了,很多人氣名店,可能因為名氣太大,無形中讓我提高了期待值,或許這次只是我剛好沒有點到適合我的品項,像是店裡的韭菜盒子、牛肉餡餅,或是現煎的鮮肉鍋貼,所以,也許等那天剛好人少、不用久等時,我才會再給它一次機會,看看這家人氣燒餅店,是否真的名符其實。




This place has been around for over 50 years, and it’s always packed with people lining up. They only sell six items: their signature scallion flatbread, chive boxes, chive buns, beef pies, pork potstickers, and iced soy milk. The menu is pretty simple, but every time I walk by and see that long line, it makes me curious and kind of excited to try it. The problem is that I really hate waiting in line, so I never actually gave it a shot.

Then one day, I passed by and noticed the line was super short. I only had to wait a few minutes to get my food. Even though I wasn’t that hungry, I figured this was my chance, so I had to try something. At that moment, they were only selling the scallion flatbread, so I grabbed a few. They make it fresh on a flat griddle right in front of you. You can see the whole process, which makes it feel clean and trustworthy, and you can smell the aroma as it cooks. No wonder they’ve been around for over 50 years.

But when I tore the flatbread open, my first impression was a bit… off. The dough didn’t have many air pockets, so it didn’t have that flaky, layered texture I was expecting. It actually felt kind of dense. They were pretty generous with the scallions, which was nice, but overall, the flavor was just… okay. Not bad, but not amazing either. After finishing it, I felt this weird sense of disappointment because there wasn’t anything that really stood out or stuck in my memory.

Honestly, this kind of thing has happened to me before. A lot of famous, popular spots end up raising your expectations so high that when you finally try them, they just don’t hit the same. Maybe I just didn’t order the right item this time. The chive box, beef pie, or freshly pan-fried potstickers might actually be the real highlights. Maybe next time, if I happen to pass by and there’s no long line, I’ll give it another try and see if this famous flatbread shop really lives up to its reputation.
