Recently, a lot of new drink shops have popped up in my neighborhood, and one of them happens to be Beitou Black Tea, a brand I couldn’t stop praising when I visited Beitou before. Honestly, the biggest selling point of Beitou Black Tea is its price—some drinks start at just 20 TWD. Unlike those famous Instagram-worthy tea shops that focus on unique flavors, colorful drinks, or pretty photo spots, this place wins on being affordable. In times like these, where everything’s getting more expensive, cheap prices are king!

Another popular tea shop is Ayue Iced Black Tea, which made its name around the Yizhong shopping district in the central region. Its main customers are students, so the prices are also very wallet-friendly. Making black tea is simple, but every shop has its own twist. Ayue uses just two basic ingredients—Assam black tea and Taiwan’s No. 2 sugar—yet it manages to hook its customers and keep them coming back for more.

This time, I decided to grab a familiar iced black tea to start my night market stroll. But wow, I noticed the price has gone up to 30 TWD! Prices have really been rising fast lately. Still, Ayue’s black tea tastes just as good as I remember. It got me thinking about another topic: shrinkflation. That’s when the size or weight of a product decreases, but the price stays the same—it’s like a sneaky way of raising prices. Honestly, I’d rather shops just be upfront about price increases. As a consumer, I want the right to choose. If a product is really worth it, people who want it will still buy it.

Walking around Yizhong Night Market, I couldn’t tell if food stall prices had gone up like Ayue’s tea, but the crowds were as packed as ever. Are people just browsing without buying? I couldn’t say. But like I mentioned, cheap prices are the real deal. As long as the quality is good and the prices stay low, strong products will always keep a business growing.
