Expression Of Love At Gatherings
No matter what is being celebrated, most cultures or traditions food accompanies the celebrations as a gesture of love shown with those people who care about each other.
With my sons and my own birthday being exceptionally close in dates we normally have one braai (type of BBQ), other celebratory days spent in a more relaxed atmosphere. Are all three of us cynical in not enjoying adding another number, not having photographs or crowds?
Many are confused by our reaction, is it so wrong not wanting to make a big deal out of your birthday? It upsets extended family wanting an excuse to party, of this I am sure, consider you are alive for 365 days in the year, celebrate when you in the mood or every day, well that's my excuse.
After big 21st birthdays appeared celebrations dissolved somewhat, most don't take days off, few go out for dinner, some prefer waiting for anniversaries to let their hair down if they so desire.
Over the last couple of weeks we had a braai which is what I will show this time as to enjoying the late afternoon simply chatting over a drink or two having fun..., our way.
Why not celebrate on the day, for me simply surprise them whenever you feel it's appropriate, many have birthdays on religious or other holidays, what about them?
When boys were young outings or big parties arranged up to age of 21, we all discussed gifting throughout years events, realization is, we appreciate more not enduring hot season celebrations with fake smiles.
Save to buying something for the whole family, eventually buy something the person really needs at the time.
Perhaps not cynicism, an adult approach with no children in the home, as a family we decided what we felt more relevant opposed to huge celebrations throughout the year.
My sons birth dates are 2 years and 5 days apart, as teenagers each alternate year a friend could accompany them on family holidays, small gathering of their friends on a weekend closest to their dates.
Who is counting the days to their next aging year, not me! Celebrate life every day, celebrate every hug, smile, chat while you still able.
Appreciating things together never comes with being old or wise, it all boils down to appreciation of what we have before us now.
