Summer in the Netherlands is known for its bright tapestry of festivals and activities.
Those brave enough to immerse themselves in the Dutch spirit will be treated to a kaleidoscope of music, culture, and uninhibited enjoyment.
While some magnificent events are thoughtfully planned by professional event organizers, many others are sincere projects that are the result of the enthusiasm of local clubs and associations.
I am privileged to be part of such an association – a folklore shooting club, to be precise.
My association had a lot going on during the summer, which took place in two weekends where we hosted our own festival.
An enormous project, driven solely by our team of volunteers' passion and commitment.
As a member of a folklore shooting association, I’m immersed in a world of colorful parades and friendly competitions.
Before delving into our own events, let's set the scene with a glimpse of a larger parade I participated in.
Historical military outfits
These first groups epitomize the grandeur of historical fashion, with towering hats, sharp accents, and the dramatic flair of the 16th century.
Original military outfits
A shift in style is evident in this next clip. These costumes, which draw inspiration from military uniforms, are more understated but just as striking.
Fantasy military outfits
Finally, we have the free spirits: outfits that defy categorization, blending colors and styles in a unique and eye-catching way.
This spectacle of 134 groups from the Netherlands and Belgium unfolds over two hours, a vibrant tapestry of human creativity.
Festival Grounds
The parade was a visual feast, a two-hour procession of rhythm and spectacle. But the day's excitement didn't end there.
As the final notes of the marching bands faded, the crowd made its way to a sprawling venue that transformed into a bustling hub of activity.
Tents, food stalls, and shooting ranges emerged from seemingly nowhere, all orchestrated by the tireless efforts of volunteers.
Shooting Competition
The atmosphere was electric.
Spectators lined the fences, their eyes fixed on the shooting competitions.
It was a battle of skill and camaraderie, with each village vying for the coveted title.
A symphony of excitement and expectation permeated the air as rifle cracks and crowd roars arose.

As the sun began to set, the focus turned from competition to joy.
An enormous tent, a pulsating heart of music and glee, urged revelers to join the festivities.
The wonderful band Wir Sind Spitze performed at our association's function, transforming classic tunes into joyful polka-infused anthems.
From the minute they took the stage, it was a nonstop display of song, energy, and sheer joy.

Imagine "Don't Stop Believin'" with a polka beat!
Or the song "Sweet Child O' Mine" given a playful twist.
Their exuberant show, which included confetti cannons and flamethrowers, thrilled the audience.

An army of committed volunteers worked nonstop behind the scenes to make sure everything went according to plan.
Their efforts were the foundation of our success, from erecting the tents and staffing the food stalls to controlling the crowds and making sure everyone was safe.
And what was the prize?
A sense of accomplishment and a €20,000 profit that will be reinvested in our group to support the purchase of new machinery and upkeep of our customs.
The next time you're at a festival, stop to acknowledge the labor of love put in by those in the background.
Their commitment and enthusiasm produce life-changing moments.
I'd like to extend an invitation to you to attend a festival in the Netherlands' southern region.
It's open to everyone to enjoy the cuisine, drinks, music, and great company.
Let's rejoice together!
