The debate between sweet and salty food is one of those topics people jump on wrongly because there is a common idea by some people that sweet foods are junk food. A lot of elderly people I know don’t eat sweet things at all claiming that it’s not good for the body and it makes me laugh.
I spent a few days with my family friend sometime last year and was challenged by dad about my sweet food consumption and I remember him emphasizing that being a man, consuming sweet food isn’t a good thing.
I know the risk of taking excessive sugar but little did they know that the importance of sugar in the body can’t be quantified. Sugar is broken down by our body into glucose which is very important for our sugar level.
Natural Sweet Foods vs. Junk
I understand where the ideology about sweet foods came from because if you look at junk foods, they are addictive because of the artificial sweetness which is harmful. Over the years, there have been various campaigns against junk food and the impact on human health but a good percentage of the world won’t just listen.
Still, that doesn’t mean all sweet food causes harm to our body system like junks will do. I am a big fan of sweet foods and it doesn’t mean that I do junks. 98% of my food is homemade and yet sweet despite not consuming sugar. I eat a lot of sweet foods but they are all natural and I tell people you don’t have to do junk before eating sweet food.
My Experience with Sweet Foods.
I eat sweet food daily and don’t have any complications from it. Unlike many people who struggle from piles, I don’t and it amazes people whenever I mention it. This morning, I have had beans and potatoes which are both sweet foods but not your regular sweet foods. Aside from beans and potatoes being sweet, they contain numerous nutrients that are beneficial to the body.
There are numerous vegetables that would give you the sweetness you get from junks but people just prefer junks.
Switching to Healthier Alternatives.
A long time ago, I stopped taking soft drinks because of the detriment to our health. I switched to taking fruit juice made by me and there has been no regret so far because the sweetness is natural. Someone once asked me if buying natural sweet foods doesn’t cost more than junk and that’s where people make the mistakes.
Preparing your sweet food doesn’t cost as much as junk food and it’s always healthy.
For instance, whenever I want to make fruit juice, I can spend just a thousand naira on fruit. All I have to do is blend the fruit, ice it and serve- it’s as simple as that.
The Bottom Line.
Eating sweet food isn’t a bad thing but the kind of sweet food you eat is what matters. When it’s natural, it’s healthy and doesn’t pose any threat to our health but when it’s the other way around, it can be harmful. I have never condemned people eating sweet food but it has to be the right one.
