Oh I've had my unfair share of the results of protests and strikes!
Maybe not so unfair of a share because I've heard of people who lost their lives to same kind of situation but here I am being able to tell the story, I guess I'll just leave it at, I've had my own fair share of it.
One thing is clear, protests and strikes are things we see often here in my country and they come with different processes and outcomes. I've seen cases where the protests and strikes resulted to a better outcome than it was before it happened which is good but sadly, I've seen more that didn't end well at all.
There is almost no public or country wide strike that didn't affect me but one struck deeper than the others for me as a student some years back. I had to go browse about it to find out when it happened and how long the strike took place before I continued my life as a student, I was more surprised than how I felt when it was happening.
The last one that happened before this strike that affected me as a student happened when I was at home waiting to resume school. That affected my studies too but I guess it felt mild since it started during an holiday but delayed our resumption. The killings, threats and tears that came with it was no joke but I'm just glad it didn't take more lives than it did before it was resolved.
I've never been a fan of protests whether peaceful or not, I feel the essence of it has been neglected and people now do it for what it was not made out for. The strike that affected my school and many other schools seemed unnecessary but at the same time, very important... Students were just in tears.
We had to spend more than 8 months at home during school period waiting for lecturers to call off their strike, one they initiated for not being paid after working for so many months. It was understandable but students' life were on hold because of it and it wasn't good at all.
I remember how many students thought it was just going to be a few days strike and so they stayed back in school waiting for the strike to be called of only for it to take another month until the third month, a lot of students including myself took our bags and went back home in tears wishing we had known better.
It's frustrating to wait for something without knowing when your wait will be over especially for something that seem like it's supposed to be easy to end. That strike felt that way for many of us. It got worse when covid 19 strike joined in making the students stay home much longer.
Almost a whole year was added to my graduating years, it was real and I could do nothing about it. Facing whatever comes and going with the flow was the only thing students could do but thank goodness, today I'm a graduate and it's almost as if it never happened... Oh it did, it definitely happened!
