Food is a very important part of life. It’s something everyone needs to survive, but beyond that, eating good food brings a certain level of satisfaction and comfort. When I’m at home, eating is never really a problem because food is always available, and I have the time to cook whatever I want. Most times, I eat at least three times a day—morning, afternoon, and night. There are even times when I eat late at night, just because I feel like it or because there’s still some food left in the kitchen.
However, when I’m in school, things are quite different. We are not allowed to cook in the hostel,so i don’t always have the luxury of eating three full meals a day. Unlike at home, where I can easily go to the kitchen and make something for myself, I mostly rely on eateries or the cafeteria to get my food in school. The problem with that is that buying food every day can be very expensive, so I try to manage the little money I have by eating at most twice a day instead of three times.
Most times, I get my first meal from the school cafeteria in the morning and then at night, I either buy bread with something else or just drink garri and suya, depending on how much money I have left. Garri has honestly saved me a lot of times. It’s cheap and fills me up, even though it’s not the best thing to be eating all the time. Although, there are some days when I feel like treating myself, so I go to a proper eatery to get good food, but that’s only when I have extra money to spare.
When it comes to eating, I prefer both quantity and quality. I like food that tastes good, but at the same time, I want to eat something that will actually fill me up. That’s why I’m very selective about the cafeterias i visit in school. Some places sell large portions of food, but the food doesn’t taste nice. Sometimes, eating there even gives me stomach upset, which is something I definitely want to avoid. There’s no point in eating a lot of food if I’m just going to regret it later.
To manage my eating pattern better, I have a time schedule for eating. Most days, I take my first meal around 11 PM, then I go get food again by like 7:30 PM so that I can return to my hostel before the curfew at 9 PM. That’s the routine I’ve been following for a while now, and it works for me. However, when I’m at home, I don’t follow any strict schedule. I eat in the morning, afternoon, and sometimes in the evening or even at night, depending on how I feel and how much food is at home.
In the end, food is something I appreciate a lot. Even though school life and the price of food has made me cut down on how often I eat, I still try to make sure that whatever I eat is worth it. Managing food expenses as a student isn’t easy, but with proper planning, I’ve been able to find a balance between eating well and not spending too much. Hopefully, one day, I’ll be able to afford to eat whatever I want, whenever I want, without worrying about money. But for now, I’ll just keep managing and making the best of what I have.
