The harvests continue. First thing yesterday morning I was out hacking away at the cabbages. The bugs are getting to them so only so many more will actually form good heads. I ended up getting 16 pounds from 15 heads which are all in the cooler.
As I went to weigh the cabbage I noticed the distinct lack of birds in the pallet hut and I found that their perch was their death. The dummies were perched with their heads out the fence and an owl most likely came along and killed them all with a quickness. ALL of them. Didn't touch the brooder, just the teens...
The summer squash are now growing properly shaped instead of the bulbous aborts that the plants started with. 6.25 pounds from them.
Then 6 cucumbers were ready in the greenhouse.
The boys helped pick peas and the got 1.75 pounds with me going behind them and picking the other 2 pounds they missed.
@generikat mentioned a spud fork for garlic and since I did not have one I ran down to North 40 real quick to pick one up. I also got a new rake that the boys will be able to handle.
So the first use of the fork was to dig the Uzbekistan garlic row. It is the longest of the 3 and holy balls did the fork do the trick. I went and loosened the entire row then just went along and plucked the bulbs, shook the soil off, then piled them.
I bunched into groups of 30 with a partial bunch. 102 head of garlic all got hung in the shed.
PDC is on mid day all week which is nice in the heat of the afternoon to sit and watch on breaks from working.
My first throw at the board was pretty slick, the nit went down hill until I was warmed up.
Next was the last row of garlic, the Northern White, which I ended up with 54 heads which got bunched and hung with the others.
My afternoon was taken up with the potatoes. The last row of the Red Nordland in the main garden is a full 50 foot row. I got all the plants pulled and any potatoes in the basket which went to the deck to get washed and dried.
It was SUPER nice to have the cloud cover all day as it kept the mid 90sF temps manageable. It was still quite humid though. I dug the row from the bottom towards the top and got to the post of the grapes which filled the baskets and the tub. The new fork was AMAZING compared to the pitchfork I was using. The row rather flew by and soon I was to the pole.
I have 10-12 feet left to dig but I have to pull the plastic from under the grapes which will take a bit of work today.
I was soaked from sweat and needed a good cool down for a bit.
I had to let the earlier spuds dry so the big batch sat for a while until I could wash and lay them out.
70.5 pounds from the 35 feet which is over 2 pounds per foot in this row. I still have 10-12 feet to go so I hope to keep that average going. At the end of the day I had my first 100+ pound harvest day.
I put on Super Mario Brothers, the ORIGINAL movie, with Dennis Hopper and John Leguizamo which the boys loved.
After the recent fuckup of my action camera I used the prime day to get a new much better one. It has a really nice remote for it which will make things SO MUCH nicer for flying.
Got out to soak earlier but I had to get out and foam roll my sore back.
Today I have more potatoes to dig, need to cut the grass and weeds were the garlic was so I can till the entire area and cover with black plastic, the coop door opener stepper motor controller died so I have to order a new one, I have my IFS appointment, I need to tie and trim in the greenhouse, then figure out something for dinner this evening.
