Day Of Sprinkles, Harvests, Bees, Weeds, Bread, 3DP, Tobacco, Potatoes, Downpour - Wednesday

in Homesteading25 days ago (edited)

Woke to full cloud cover and the doppler showed rain was inbound at some point in the morning.

The forecast called for some possible heavy weather but as I watched the doppler over the morning it was clear that the consistent bubble around Spokane was going to limit our moisture.

It looked like it could go off... but that was just an illusion.

Out in the garden I got the squash picked and had a pretty wonky twin that had grown. Conjoined squash are a lot easier to separate than conjoined beings...

The curled cucs get picked early so the plants aren't putting the energy into wonky ones. The tomatoes are gradually giving me one here and there.

With the cloud cover and the nice 70F temp for most of the day I was able to boil the water in the kitchen and made a big batch of syrup for the bees. I set it outside to cool off for a while.

I had a hunch early and mid day proved it right. The rain went all around us and even when it showed it right over the farm we got nearly nothing.

Before noon the syrup was cool enough so I got it poured into the feeder. In a week I will get into the hive and see if we have anything in the flow frames. I will pull them regardless and then have to dose the hive with the anti mite treatment.

While weeding in the garden I found that we have a few nice sized pumpkins growing. This is the largest that I found buried in the mass of plants.

I hacked the cabbage plants off and tossed them in the wheelbarrow then filled the tub with pulled weeds.

Which went to the animals who dove into the pile.

The fall feeling temps lead me to getting the bread machine out and making a loaf.

The hen and chicks needed a bigger waterer so I got the tall one put in so they will have water for a week or more.

Went around to my various tobacco plants and pulled leaves from them.

IMG_20250806_140651.jpg

With the weather I had to lay them out on the screen in the garden shed until the heat comes back and I can set them outside to dry faster.

Went through the beet row and got a nice sized pile. Still a lot in the row that can still keep growing. This is my fourth thinning which gave me 5 pounds.

A couple of amaranth are flowering but this is the largest in the garden.

One of the watermelons got plucked and put in the house to finish ripening. 7 pounds for the near volleyball sized melon.

The loaf of bread came out great and had to cool for a while. It ended up half gone by bed time...

Printed out a desk cable guide/latch. Print in place is pretty nifty when joints move easily.

Out in the garden again I worked through more of the red potatoes and got a nice 41 pounds.

IMG_20250806_164636.jpg

Washed and drying on the deck for the evening I got them sorted a bit later. I managed to finish filling the big bag of big reds and got it to 50 pounds so it can go to the studio.

Managed a half hour soak and was out as the rain drops began to fall.

IMG_20250806_203758.jpg

This time the doppler WASN'T lying and the downpour soon hit.

It lasted a little while and the rain pounded down. Made the air smell so much nicer and dropped the temps.

Today I have garden work to do, then I have work for my client trying to get his night lighting to work and checking a couple of the drains.
