Banana Harvest, ripening and Preparations

in Homesteading2 months ago

Hello Hive

This is usually one of the seasons for banana harvest. All the banana bunches that may have been matured in the farm find it very easy to get ripened these days. The hot weather promotes ripening better than the cooler weather. Hence, a lot of bananas get ripe at this time. Palm fruits equally get ripe too, and if you are privileged to have some palm trees, we are in the season of palm oil. A lot of our palm fruits get ripe at this time, and we are able to process lots of palm oil from them.

My family prefers to eat natural oil, and most of the vegetable oil and palm oil we eat are naturally prepared with our hands.

While my brother was out on the farm yesterday, even though everywhere is dry and there are no planted crops here except for those growing by the riverbank. He found some bananas that are ripening already, and instead of leaving them, he harvested and brought them home.

Once you leave them on the farm and before your next visit, they can become overripe and spoiled; hence, it is sometimes good to harvest them when they are halfway to getting ripe.

In the same way we all know that there are different species of bananas, this one is one of the different species. These kinds are usually thick, and I prefer to cook them rather than allow them to be ripe and eat that way.

Removing the ones that are already becoming ripe, I decided to make a meal of the ripe ones.

I simply boiled the unripe ones in water until they were properly cooked and soft.

Then I prepared some pepper sauce to eat with it. It was a delicacy and served as my lunch yesterday.

Everyone in the house liked the meal. It is easily digested. It's a good thing that I learned how to prepare all these local meals from my mom, or else I wouldn't be able to know that bananas can be boiled and eaten as food, and that will restrict us to eating only the ripe ones.

I know that someone will like to ask me if these are banana or plantain. Like I said earlier that there are different species of banana and these ones are the more larger size often called plantain but my mum often say that they are not as long as planting and she always likes to call them the thick banana specie.
When these gets ripe you can equally fry them in the same way we eat protein below. But I prefer to use real pla gains for this meal and boil the short banana instead.

In case you harvested something like this and want them to ripen up in haste. You can wrap them up in newspapers and cover them up in airtight containers; it is the natural way to ripen food instead of using harmful chemicals. It's good that we stay safe and eat healthy meals, avoiding frequent use of chemicals.
