Ordering something for the first time? What could go wrong? This is my experience ordering Arabic food. On this occasion, I didn’t want falafel or shawarma (I would have ordered shawarma, but it was more expensive). My daughter still wanted to order something different, and this time she was surprised by what she ordered: a giant plate.

“How am I supposed to eat this?” was the first thing I thought, all by myself, because my other friends had already ordered their own Arab meals, and while it’s true that Arab food is meant to be shared, like this dish.

What I ordered is called Falafel on a Plate, which is basically falafel served on a plate. It comes with plenty of salad—like tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, and onions—with a generous amount of sauce. It also includes several kibbeh. Plus, they give you several pieces of Arabic bread to go with the dish.

We had just come from seeing Michael Jackson, and since the combo meals at the movie theater are expensive—around $12—we decided to go eat Arabic food at a little place called Alibaba, which is across from a shopping center called Traki. It’s true that there’s no nightlife in Cumaná, and to be fair, at 10:30 p.m. we ordered late, and it was the only place open.

I’ll start by saying I laughed at myself for ordering something I obviously wasn’t going to eat right then, especially since it was a huge dish and I was short on time. I’m a particularly slow eater. So I tried it, liked it, but decided to take it to go.

It’s good, but it’s a meal meant to be shared among several people. That’s why I regretted not ordering a falafel, but the order had already been placed. It’s quite filling, and for lovers of Middle Eastern food and tangy flavors, it’s pretty good.

THE SECRET? DID I EAT IT? Yes, by myself, but when I got back to the apartment, I was able to eat it while we chatted about life. So I celebrated because I got to eat it alone, but I got full. Would I order it again? No, unless I can share it with friends. It cost $7.

This is my experience trying another giant Arab dish. I hope you like it—see you soon!
