Dodging the Supermarkets

As it becomes more and more obvious that large corporations and companies essentially are doing their best to be parasites on the whole of society, we are doing more and more to try and move away from the larger established dominating forces.

Supermarkets in Australia have long had an entrenched duopoly... and that lack of competition has meant that they have gouged customers AND suppliers at will. Before the internet, it was harder to source food from non-supermarket sources in a city... however, with the rise of smaller players that are more about direct supplier to customer transactions, it is becoming easier to dodge the supermarkets completely.

We now do all our fruit and veggie shops via a community hub... and we have recently started doing a bulk purchase of meat from a local supplier as well.

You can get hampers that are between 100-300 AUD... and there is more than enough meat in there for our little family. We don't eat lots of meat in our meals... and when we do, we often prefer to eat small amounts of good cuts instead of large quantities.

... and this is what you get for about 150 AUD, a box (there is another couple of layers of meat underneath!) of various animals and cuts. Much of this will go into the freezer for later use... and it generally lasts us about a month or so!

So... better meat, less meat... at a much cheaper price than the supermarkets (also better quality...), and supporting the butchers and suppliers directly!

Win win... and the supermarkets will hopefully start to take notice that people don't like paying huge mark-ups on smaller and worse quality... and the CEOs can't keep spinning that as great for everyone anymore!

Time to grow your own :)

I'm not sure that I'm allowed to eat my children!

Oh I didn't realise that the meat was human :P

I think this is a smart way to go. I think you will find the quality of the meat is a lot better too. I have a cousin that raises cows, so I get most of my beef from him besides steaks. I usually have to go to the store for those because he keeps them for himself! My wife and I have had our groceries delivered ever since Covid. It's just less stressful for us and we find that we actually spend less money.

I had thought about the grocery delivery, but Australia really has a supermarket duopoly that gouges everyone (supplier and customer)... any little way to wean ourselves off them is going to be good. A big plus if the meat is better quality and cheaper as well!

yeah, that is probably for the best then!
