Fondas: Surry Hills, AUSTRALIA

I've been walking past this place in Surrey Hills, Sydney quite often on the way from the hotel where I stay for work to the tram to work. I've always wanted to drop in and try it out... but it always seemed a bit too trendy for me to be in... or at least, to visit alone.

But I recently came back to Sydney with my family, and I suggested that we drop by for some interesting Mexican food!

The Space

So, I'm not exactly sure what it was that I found a bit disconcerting about this place.... perhaps it was just too pastel and pinkish? Well, as soon as my older girl saw it... she LOVED it! Sigh... maybe that was the reason that it wasn't my thing...

... but still, the place did have nice stalls and we found ourselves near the back in a comfy spot away from the foot traffic at the front.

The Menu

So many Mexican things to try out... but we are small eaters, and we can't take one of everything! And even then, we probably can only have at best three dishes for four of us!

I'm not exactly sure when Australia followed the American sizings... but it is definitely something that we have noticed since coming back.

The Food

Some chicken tacos to start off with... My kids wanted these, and they were pretty good... but a touch heavy on the onions! We ended up scraping a few of those off!

... and for my wife and I, a prawn taco and a fish taco. Fish for me, I love fish tacos!

... and all of this started the big question about whether we liked soft or hard shells for the tacos. Hard for my kids... soft for me and my wife.

We did get a loaded nachos which was really awesome... but I forgot to take a photo before we demolished it!

But we did have this Chicken Quesadilla to share... and it was pretty decent as well... but nowhere close to touching the loaded nachos!

Now, on to the drinks! And these were definitely the highlight of the meal... a lime and pineapple soda for my wife... wow, this was amazing! Not too sweet, but seriously strong on taste!

But this Horchata.... wow, perfect summer drink! Sweet and light... refreshing as well. I really have to learn how to make these... both myself and the kids had these, and we loved them.

The Experience

The food and drinks were pretty good... even if I thought that the way the place was decorated was a touch intimidating... but in the end, I really did enjoy the place.

But not really for single person though... I guess it was the way that seating was set up... lots of group seating and stalls. I guess that was the thing that put me off.

But in the end, really nice to visit as a family.
