Old School Kafey: Sydney, AUSTRALIA

Ever since walking past this shop a few months ago... and seeing all these people eating the most amazing looking desserts... I've wanted to visit this place with my family... well, more importantly, with my girls! My wife wouldn't be quite as keen as the kids...

... and when they were here, I made sure we walked past the Old School Kafey on our first evening... to point out the wonderful things that were on offer! And the girls wanted to hop straight in... except that we had just eaten a fairly substantial dinner, and couldn't have fit anything more in... not even with a dessert stomach!

So, we came back on the next evening... after making sure to have a relatively light dinner. The girls and I wanted to just come straight here... and just have dessert for dinner... but my wife kept suggesting that it was a bad idea... until we gave in and had a small dinner before walking here.

The Space

The indoor decor is best described as crazily bright and confused... there is bits and pieces from every culture and holiday and colour and lights and yes... there is a bike up there. We came on a good evening, the night before it was completely packed!

Yes... santa... with weird baby dolls, and copper pipes, and petrol company logos... It is just plain odd!

The Menu

Unfortunately, the dessert bar has moved to a mostly digital QR menu system... can I again mention how much I hate those things... and the card payments with surcharges... it is all really dumb and annoying. Not to mention, insecure.

So, I went outside and took a photo of the menu... and paid in cash as well... just to be super annoying! But just look at the colours on those desserts!

The Food

Okay... we were only two small adults and two kids... and with a minimum order of 10 dollars per person, we had to order two desserts!

The first was a warm brioche like toasted thing... covered in Pandan sauce with cream and ice-cream... and rosemary... drizzled in caramel sauce. Oh my gosh... this was like a delicious thick waffle! And not crazily sweet either, just perfect!

... but the main reason that we came was for this Bingsu! Apparently a Japanese noble dessert... shaved sweet milk/coconut ice with different toppings. We had mochi, with mango slices, mango tea balls, and mango sauce... and marscapone and rosemary. Not sure what the obsession with Rosemary was... mint might have worked better...

... but this was just amazing... it is fluffy in texture... and again, not crazily sweet, which made it easy to eat! But still, definitely a shared job... we wouldn't have been able to finish one of these by ourselves!

The Experience

Wow... these desserts were quite something else! We would definitely be coming back for more... there were lots of different Bingsu variants to try... even my wife was convinced after being so skeptical beforehand! I wasn't a huge fan of the minimum order... a single dessert would have been enough for us, but that was under the limit... perhaps we should have ordered drinks instead of the second dessert though!

The foods are so nice and good for sure that's all delicious. Continue to have fun and eat good foods with your family.

Wow, those look quite impressive. The inside has a somewhat Christmas vibe to it. Dessert places like this are very dangerous for me. My wife not so much. She prefers salty over sweet snacks.

@bengy, sorry to see that you have less Hive Power.
Your level lowered and you are now a Minnow!

Given that you probably eat a balanced diet/meals the rest of the time I am reasonably sure that one night of having dessert for dinner and dessert is not going to mess up anything in the grand scheme XD

I would have totally just gone straight there bypassing "proper" dinner and we would have done the same thing of paying in cash, we still do the same thing at San Churro's on the rare occasions that we go there even though they have the qr codes conveniently at the table so you can "skip the queue"
