World's Biggest Braai - a New South African Guinness World Record

On the 24th September, South Africa is taking aim at the Guinness World Record for the most people grilling/barbecuing (aka Braai in South Africa) at the same time.

The current world record is held by Japan... they managed to get 2, 220 Japanese people to braai at the same time in Ishigaki city.

Current world record:

That 2,220 mark from Japan feels within reach at Loftus, especially on Heritage Day. Love that you opened it up for folks to join via tickets, big community energy. Quick one, what counts as a valid setup on the day, charcoal or gas, and does each grill need its own meat handler for Guinness to tick it off? I can already hear the sizzle from Pretoria.

Yeah... the rules (like all the previous records I've attempted) are very strict... gas or coals are allowed (but we'll be using coals). 6 People per braai (braai stands will all be setup on the D Field, pre-lit and ready for participants).

That clears things up. For Guinness, do all six need to have meat on the braai at the same time for a set time, and is there a minimum cook time? Are you fixing the meat type and portion or can people bring their own, and do we need our own tongs and seasoning?

Actually all 2,500 need to have meat on the fire at the same time (there are 420 brai stands... and 6 people per stand).
Yeah, your R200 entry includes everything you need to be part of the record: meat, tongs, apron, charcoal, pre-lit braai etc. ... unfortunately you won't be able to bring your own meat.

Crystal clear. Getting 2,500 to put meat on the fire at the same time sounds epic. Will there be a big countdown so everyone knows exactly when to go? The R200 bundle sounds spot on, and no BYO makes sense for the record.

Indeed! Will South Africans be able to organise!
