Oscar Wilde
I had planned to write this on Sunday night and it's already Wednesday .... The thing is, my husband and I celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary last Sunday. We have been together for a few more years, but our wedding anniversary is June 2nd. And maybe after so many years one already knows what the other thinks, and we both came up with the same idea to celebrate the occasion.
For a long time, the husband had been looking forward to eating again Entrecote Café de Paris. When we started dating many many years ago hehe, there was a restaurant in Caracas called L'Entrecote where they used to serve that classic dish. In fact the menu of that restaurant had little more than that which was the center of the menu.
Last year, a small French bistro was opened in the town of El Hatillo in Caracas. We had seen it several times and some friends had told us about the place and the food, which includes in its menu the famous entrecote. But the place is out of our budget, so we had never considered it in our occasional outings. But the 23rd anniversary deserved a little treat, don't you think?
So last Sunday, we booked to have our anniversary lunch at the bistro called Rue de Lys.
The decoration of the place makes you feel in a small Parisian bistro. The ambiance and the service were very nice.
The Food
We ordered the house salad to share. It was good but I must say not extraordinary. The dressing that had a touch of passion fruit seemed to me to lack a bit of flavor.
The Entrecôte Café de Paris was delicious. And the husband and I killed the craving.
Looking for the origin of this dish that many believe originated in France but oh surprise it is not. The Café de Paris sauce was popularized in the 30s by a restaurant in Geneva, Switzerland called Café de Paris. However, the sauce was invented by the father-in-law of the owner of Café de Paris. Monsieur Boubier had invented the sauce recipe for the customers of his own restaurant, du Coq d'Or. You can read the full story here.
The sauce is based on butter, spices, and herbs among which tarragon predominates.
It was accompanied by French fries, as it should be, and we ordered them truffled and with parmesan.
As we had decided to share the Entrecot, we ordered another side dish. A mushroom risotto that was so yummy. I think I liked it the most!
We had a delicious meal and a very nice time.
To end our meal we ordered a coffee that came with a small madeleine. I thought it was a nice touch.
I was thinking of skipping dessert, but with my husband, that's mission impossible. So we ordered a Pistachio dessert to share.
It was two meringue and almond cookies, filled with pistachio cream with strawberry coulis. It wasn't bad but I thought it lacked pistachio flavor, so I let my husband eat most of it. 😆 I had indulged enough with all the food.
The food was delicious and the company was even better.
We probably won't repeat it anytime soon in this small bistro, but we will consider it for another special occasion for sure.
