Hello, friends especially foodies!
Recently after many times not coming back to my second hometown, Surabaya, I decided to go to a popular small restaurant which sold East Javanese food. I’ve never been there before so it was my first experience to be there. Now let’s find out how their taste.
The name of the small restaurant is Kantin Rujak Cingur Khas Surabaya (P Hadi), like its’ name it is well known of Cingur Rojak (Cow’s nose rojak), an authentic dish came from East Java.
Well, this place is located not far from Gondangdia train station, so it would be easy to come there by public transportation especially train.
The place was not large and it had some tables, soft red chairs completed with fans. It doesn’t have any air conditioners, and it was modest. It has no decorations and no interior concept.
For the food menu, this place had many kind of East Javanese dishes.
They sold Tahu Campur (mixed tofu), Tahu Gunting (sliced tofu), Tahu Telur (egg tofu), roasted/fried fish/chicken, sour veggie soup, spinach soup, urap/lalap, chicken/lamb satay, rib soup, oxtail soup, fried oxtail soup, chicken soto, maduranese soto, beef soto, sulung soto, lamb/chicken tongseng, rawon, rujak cingur (cow’s nose rojak), rojak, veggie pecel, gado-gado, karedok, and also mixed rice.
For the beverage menu they had kopyor iced, combination coconut iced, young coconut iced, lychee iced tea, milo milk, teler iced, avocado iced, orange iced, grassjelly iced, mixed iced, soda milk iced, gembira soda milk iced, tea, lemon tea, coffee, hot orange, hot milk and mineral water. And they sold some kind of fruit juice too there.
At the back of their menu, they also sold some food packages which contained fried fish/chicken packaged with rice and some other things.
TA DA, not a long time after we ordered, our food menus were all delivered to our table. Could you guess what they were?
This was “Maduranese Soto”.
It had lots of beef inside, the beef were all soft. It also had egg too. The flavour of it was savory and it was just quite tasty. Not enough to fulfil my desire of the real maduranese soto i usually found in Surabaya. It was not thick enough.
This was “Egg Tofu”
They fried the egg separated with tofu which is not correct. In Surabaya they usually fry it along with the tofu. Wrong way to cook! The petis paste (shrimp mixed peanut paste) it came with was also not too tasty. It was just so so, it had savory and spicy flavour.
This was their authentic “Rujak Cingur”
Cingur means cow’s nose, so it supposed to come with quite amount of it, right? But what we had that day was the opposite, it only came with a little of cingur. Beside cingur, it had some boiled veggies such as water spinach, beansprout, and others like fried tofu, fried tempeh and cucumber. Unfortunately it was also not tasty, it was just so so. It had sweet, savory and spicy flavour.
So, as the conclusion, I am not satisfied with the East Javanese food they provided because it is not authentic (I raised in Surabaya, which mean I know exactly how them supposed to be). Well, of course we won’t come back there, I think once is enough.
