Hello friends, sometimes we crave something soothing, especially after a great party or celebration or simply when we want to reminisce about being in Thailand... If you ever feel this way, I recommend my easy and quick recipe. And if you love Tom Yum, I suggest giving it a try at home.
Ingredients for Tom Yum:
- 4 liters of chicken broth (you can use pre-made or boil it yourself, it should only contain broth without any meat)
- Several fresh squids (thinly sliced)
- 15 large prawns
- 100 grams of mushrooms (in this dish, "Cha Su Gu" mushrooms are used, but if unavailable, I prefer oyster mushrooms)
- 100 grams of fish (I used tilapia)
- 1 onion
- 4 cloves of garlic
- Some fresh ginger
- 7 cherry tomatoes (whole or sliced)
- Half a lemon
- 1 hot fresh chili pepper
- Fresh lime leaves and lemon grass stalks (or dried)
- 1 tablespoon of fish sauce, preferably Vietnamese style
- 1 tablespoon of spicy Tom Yum paste
- Half a can of coconut milk
- Half a bunch of fresh cilantro
Preparation:
To start, let's thinly slice the raw squid and clean and slice the mushrooms. As you prepare these ingredients, put a pot on the stove and add the chicken broth to warm up.
I use tilapia as the fish, but you can use any other fish you prefer.
Of course, cherry tomatoes, garlic, onion, ginger, lemon grass, lime leaves, and sauces are also needed. Don't forget the fish sauce and spicy paste.
I had some coconut milk on hand from previous recipes, so I used half a can. And of course, fresh cilantro and chili pepper will be needed. Chop everything up and set aside.
The chili I use is very spicy. If you want to add extra heat, you can add more Tom Yum paste.
Let's chop each ingredient and put them into a bowl. Chop the onion, we'll add it as the dish cooks. Let's halve the four tomatoes, thinly slice them, chop the garlic, it'll cook with our dish too. We'll also add the ginger root.
Next, let's cut the lemon grass and crush it slightly, we want its aroma to be more pronounced. Add it to the pre-prepared chicken broth. First, into the chicken broth, we add lemon grass, lime leaves, garlic, lemon and ginger. And let it boil for five minutes.
Moving on to the next step. Let's add our mushrooms and cook for a bit. After a few minutes, add the fish, tomatoes, onion, squid and prawns. Also add a bit of fish sauce, I added about a tablespoon.
Once it starts boiling, add the Tom Yum paste and coconut milk, then stir carefully. Let it cook until it reaches boiling point, then remove from heat.
Pour into bowls and there you have it, so delicious. Truly a flavorful dish, a bit different from the original but really tasty. It'll whet anyone's appetite. Enjoy! Have a great weekend.
