Whenever I want to have a taste of the olden days I would go to places where the one who makes the food have experience it first hand. One of the places where the “kampong” or “village-style” food and service still exists is Jalan Batu hawker’s center. It may not be a complete replica of the olden days but it sure is a glimpse of the past.
With all of the “viral” or “trendy” food that’s gaining popularity in social media the humble kampong-style pancake has stood the test of time. It may be an old recipe but it’s delicious that the customers (including me) still come back to buy on a regular basis.
There’s a type of hawker’s stall that never go out of customers. A long queue during peaks hours is a usual sight for this stall. It’s likely to get sold out after dinner. It’s the affordable “mixed veggie rice”.
It’s not vegetable dishes that they sell, they also have a variety of proteins like pork, chicken, and fish.
For today, I ordered the sautéed fish and stir-fried cabbage.
I like this kind of set meals which I can choose the combination that I prefer. I think it makes me feel comfortable at ordering my food and it also gives me a pleasant dining experience. There’s a “home-like” feel to this experience which I like.
Aside from the delicious food, the affordability of the dishes is the one that makes this kind of hawker stall in-demand. At the end of the day, if the food is nutritious and affordable then it’s considered a good meal.
