Food that came straight from the mountains and satisfied my heart and my stomach

Let me tell you in advance that I am not a foodie, but I have definitely fed my little stomach with different food from about 21 states while traveling across India. My tongue understands the taste of every snack or food of India. And if someone asks me what is my favorite food, it will be very difficult for me to answer this question.

Today I am taking you to a place which is situated in the mountains and is famous for its nature and honesty. This village is Rimbik which is situated on the India-Nepal border. Hindu and Buddhist communities live here and believe in preparing different types of food.

I stayed here for about 2 weeks and believe me, I tried to click photos of food every day, but due to my intense hunger, I could not click photos of every meal. Here I ate local rice which is grown in the mountains. This rice is a little thick and small in size. Also ate vegetable made from squash and fern leaves. All the spices are local and I cannot get this taste in the plains.

There is an aunty in the home stay where we are staying who is the main cook. She made momos for me in the evening, now I can't tell what was the filling inside them but I can definitely tell that aunty prepared them with her own hands and served them with love and I happily ate them to my heart's content. Momos were served with desi ghee.

From here one day we went to Darjeeling where we got a chance to drink hot tea in a cup made of clay in the cold weather. While the clouds were flying on one side, the hot cup in the hand was providing a magical feeling. One afternoon, when I returned from 16 km hiking, aunty prepared dry black gram curry which was served with dal. In India, roti is a boon for North Indians and wherever roti is available, it becomes a day. Aunty used to ensure that we have roti for lunch in the afternoon and at night.

One day while roaming I went to a nearby village named Gurdum. There we ate pakodas made from the leaves of a vine that grows on water, along with local tea. The pakodas were served with red chutney and believe me the pakodas were crunchy on the chip side. It was fun eating it.

One evening, when I was sitting in the garden of the home stay, I enjoyed the sweets I had brought with me, in which I ate laddu and jalebi. This evening aunty prepared spinach curry with rice and served roti and curry with it. The food was tasty as always and I ate it twice.

In Darjeeling, my friend and I ordered Kadhai Paneer, Dal and Roti in the afternoon. I wasn't sure if the food would be good but the food was better than I expected. And when we came back to Rimbik after completing our work in Darjeeling, aunty prepared us omelette with fried rice and fed us in the evening.

On our last day at the home stay, we got mango pickle with plain parathas to eat. So this was my food journey which lasted for about two weeks and I ate mountain food every day. I hope you liked this post. Well, this is my first post in this amazing community and I hope that I will continue to contribute here in the future also.
