My Brother Cooked Bas-oy

Happy Monday Hivers!

My mother is already quite old, she’s 70 years old, and I’ve noticed that she’s really slowing down in her movements. So whenever we go home and there are many of us, it’s no longer my mom who cooks but my younger sibling, who also loves cooking, and cooks even better than I do.

My mom bought pork and vegetables because my younger sibling requested bas-oy, a traditional Visayan pork soup made with pork, pork blood, and pechay.

So before my brother started cooking, he first sliced the pork, the vegetables, the garlic, and the onions. After preparing all the ingredients, that’s when he began cooking.

He sautéed the garlic and onion first until they turned slightly brown. After that, he added the pork and let it absorb the oil and salt before pouring in the water. Once he added the water, he let it boil thoroughly until the pork became tender.

This younger sibling of mine really cooks well. I remember when the two of us were still living in our father’s house. Every Sunday, our father wouldn’t cook because it was his rest day, so I would volunteer to prepare the meals. But this sibling of mine would never agree. I kept insisting that I would be the one to cook, but he still refused, saying I didn’t know how to cook well. (Lol)

Once he checked that the taste was just right and the pork was already tender, he added the pechay. Bas-oy really tastes better with pechay. I’m not sure if yku also also cook it this way.

After adding the pechay, he slowly poured in the pork blood. While adding it, he kept stirring constantly to prevent the blood from curdling.

After mixing all the ingredients, he tasted the dish to see if the flavor was right. He was happy with the result, saying it tasted really good. I didn’t argue this time because he really is a good cook.

After he finished cooking, I started setting the table. I placed the plates and spoons and prepared the rice, while he served the food he had cooked into bowls.

His cooking was delicious, but food always tastes better when shared with family. Even though we weren’t all together this time, at least many of us got to eat together.
