Grilled fish with a spicy kick, without dipping it in sambal, is a new dish for me—and of course, for my husband. It’s simple and super easy to prepare, and I definitely use mackerel, which has incredibly tender flesh. Now, for grilled fish seasoned like this, I think you really have to choose the right fish; using a different type will result in a tougher texture. For example, with skipjack tuna, I’d just grill it plain—it turns out even more delicious that way. Meanwhile, mackerel really shines when grilled with spices like this; the result is just like enjoying restaurant-style grilled fish.

This spicy grilled fish is incredibly delicious, even though it’s just a combination of a few spices—the result is amazing and satisfying. Curious about the preparation steps I took? Let’s take a look at the step-by-step instructions below.
Ingredients

½ lime
¼ teaspoon of salt
¼ teaspoon of black pepper
5 shallots
3 cloves of garlic
2 candlenuts
2 cm of turmeric
Cooking Procedure
Marinate the mackerel in a mixture of salt and lime juice for about five minutes.

Then, blend the spices with enough water until completely smooth.

Next, sauté the blended spices with 1 tablespoon of butter until fragrant and the spices have dried out.

Now, for the mackerel, I grill it until half-cooked without seasoning first—don’t forget to flip it over.

Finally, brush it evenly with the cooked marinade, then grill until fully cooked.

Serve the grilled fish on a serving plate. You can enjoy it with white rice—just scoop some rice and fish, then add a clear vegetable soup or broth. Trust me, it’s absolutely delicious. A simple lunch, yet the combination of flavors from all the ingredients makes this dish so special.

It’s savory and full of umami—the blend of spices and the spicy fish hits the spot for me, and it’s not too spicy. So this is perfect for me since I’m cutting back on spicy food. Everything tastes just right to me; today’s lunch was truly special in my opinion.
