Hey Hive!
We're back with more restaurantours! This was from back in Dec 2024, when we were pretty busy after going on a staycation here in Singapore. One of my streamer friends I got to know online (whose name is Evan) was visiting for a few days! He's never been here so we agreed to meet up and show him around with a few mutual friends.
We actually met up irl for the first time in his home city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, when Sean and I visited back in Dec 2023 or so.
Anyway, one of our mutual acquaintances suggested this restaurant we could try. Since I was going to work I figured I could meet them in town for lunch.
It wasn't in a mall or anything and was kind of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant but thankfully I manage to find my way there.
The restaurant is called Chilli Pan Mee (Batu Road), which is a popular eatery in Telok Ayer by famous Malaysian brand Restoran Super Kitchen Chili Pan Mee. It's quite ironic since Pan Mee is actually a KL dish and Evan came from KL to try the SG version. I thought it was a little weird but he also seemed keen on trying it.
The restaurant was quite packed around lunch time, maybe because it was a holiday time on a weekend. But I heard it also gets quite busy during weekdays because of the office workers. I guess it's a pretty famous spot so they must be quite good.
Apparently this place has been open since 2004, and now have over 15 outlets throught Klang and Singapore! Of course, they specialise in Chili Pan Mee which is flat flour noodles, minced pork, anchovies, fried shallot and poached egg all mixed with a special dry chili sauce.
I've never had Chili Pan Mee before but it's actually quite similar to a Japanese soba dish called mazesoba which is one of my favourites.
This is the menu, where they have otehr small appetisers like dumplings as well.
But of course their main dish is the chili pan mee. They also have noodle soup and rice dishes as well.
They even have special instructions on how to enjoy the Chili Pan Mee. It really is quite similar to mazesoba.
I wasn't really sure what to get but I decided on the pork chop noodle since it was the same price. To be honest I thought it was going to be the same as the chili pan mee but with pork chop instead of minced pork but I guess it was different.
The pork chop noodle also came with some fried beancurd skin, fried shallots and lard. It tasted alright, nothing super special but the pork chop was crispy and nicely seasoned. The noodles were a bit drier than I expected but thankfully it came with a bowl of soup. I like all the different textures though, the crispy beancurd was a nice complement to the sauce and the crunchiness meshed well with the al dente noodles.
My friend Evan ordered the chili pan mee of course, which actually looks like dry ban mee but I guess the special chili mix was on the bottom.
The table also had extra chili mix if you wish to add more, and I added some in my noodles since it was different. It did elevate the taste quite a bit and gave it a nice spice kick.
Overall it was quite tasty but I'm not sure it's worth going out of my way for it, and definitely not worth a long queue. I probably should've tried the regular pan mee since it was their signature dish after all but I think for that price I rather just eat mazesoba in a more convenient location. Now it's got me curious for real pan mee though, so maybe the next time we go to KL we'll try it.
By the time we were done the lunch crowd was thinning out, but I guess it must be really popular even though it's a lot more expensive here for sure.
It was still a very satisfying meal regardless. After that we had some time to kill so we brought Evan around to sightsee and visit all the touristy places that were nearby, like the very crowded Merlion:
And of course we went to see the famous Marina Bay Sands as well. Thankfully it wasn't too sunny out so we enjoyed a nice stroll sightseeing together.
After that we parted ways and wished Evan an enjoyable stay in SG! I hope he enjoyed his trip and we're always here to welcome him back anytime.
Thanks for reading!
