You should be proud of Gabriel, his willingness to defend his mother's character is honorable and that doesn't always come from his Shuri Ryu or every other styled Sensei but by what is most precious in his heart.

You are right; while Shuri Ryu gives him discipline and strength, what he did that day came from a much deeper place.
