These macro shots show a cut off tree trunk weathering in place. I believe it's a cedar, but don't quote me on that.
Ironically, dead trees are essential for the health and variety of the forest. I read that trees even pass on nutrients to younger trees just before they die. Nature is mysterious.
There is a documentary about the secret life of trees ... it is mind-blowing stuff, and then when you consider the relationships betwen them and the local fungi ... there's a lot more going on out there than we will ever know!
That's what I thought too. At times, it looked like a small city made of wood, but that effect was difficult to capture in the photo.

Wood weathers just like rock does ...water and living things growing into them ... it's just a lot faster with wood!
