The original sirens were depicted as hybrid creatures, with the head or torso of a woman and the body of a bird.
You're right. The original conception in Greek myth is a bird. I guess it was more like a modern harpy. Homer doesn't describe physical appearance, but the theme should be carried as the Greeks conceptualized it at the time the story was written.
