I wouldn't want to get shot with one, but I wouldn't really consider it a combat-viable caliber, either. Still, it could upgrade you to some invading bastard's military kit if used judiciously.
Depending on where you are, and what your legal or black market options might be, a hunting rifle can serve for defense. It would mean guerrilla war. A sniper is defined more by tactics than equipment. Shoot and scoot.
