I am a composer who occasionally covers other public domain songs and still credits them, and I approve of this message!
I always state that it's a cover, and give the name of both the songwriter, and the performer whose version I'm covering, if it isn't the original.
If that isn't enough credit, the copyright holders are welcome to try squeezing blood from my stones.
