Yep, a giant lava field. The Pacific Crest trail goes through it. I'm standing on a portion of the trail taking this shot.

Here's a view from the top. I'm standing near Dee Wright Observatory near the bottom.

That looks like an incredible hike through that field.

They've made it fairly flat but I think you probably would still want poles walking through that ankle breaking lava rock. I made it as far as the area between those 2 islands at the bottom

I was wondering what the trail would do to hiking footwear. I do use totem poles for mountainous terrain. They turn me into a four-legged pack animal, and it makes long treks so much easier on the legs by distributing the weight to the poles.
