Ladybugs (in UK ladybirds) are actually a family of bugs with 6000 different species! The name comes from Mother Mary (hence in German "Marienkäfer").

Sort:

In Dutch they are called Lieveheersbeestjes.
Where 'lieve heer' is a reference to God.

Yes, in ancient times people believed they are a gift of God.

Maybe they still are.

That's a funny name. 😂

However, the meaning is awesome!

In Russian they are called "Bojaya Korovka" which means "God's little cow"

Interesting!

And in Hebrew, "parat moshe rebeynu", which means "Cow of our rabbi Moses".

Indeed.

It's interesting to see how the names can be so different in another languages, haha!

In Brazil, we call it Joaninha. 😅

Is there a meaning?

According to my research:

Joaninha is a loving diminutive of the name "Joana", which has Hebrew origins, derived from Yôchânâh, meaning "God is gracious".

Cute little creatures. :)
