Welcome, in this post I talk about printing "glass" not really printing glass here just trying to print glass like plastic, there are clear filaments but the nature of 3d printing makes these filaments not so clear, there are ways to get more clear results and I experiments with that to try and make custom made capsules for precious metals and other collectibles.
I posted some custom capsules for sale for 5 grain silver bars that are also for sale on the Hive Bullion Exhange link to that here
The picture above is what got this all started, @silversaver888 enquired about custom capsules for her oddly shaped gold bar, It took a few tries to get some reasonable results but they still left much to be desires clarity wise.
I had ideas on how I can potentially get better results with another 3d printing material called PVB and some alcohol post processing but more on that a bit later in this post.
Right below are some of the trials for the 5 grain capsules, it took a few trials and modification to get em nice I even tried a colorful clear plastic but wasn't fan of the results.
I also wanted to work out the method with a real sample and went with a nice silver coin I got as a gift from Saint @trumpman
Notice the one on the bottom left got a nice glair and the other with the painters tape ? Those are my PVB smoothing attempts ( not really successful) but more on that a bit later in this post 🤣
I went with the regular clear PETG in the mean time and came out alright and could be a cheaper variant but I also want to print glass!
Right below are some pics of the coin in the custom printed capsule
I wanted to see how things look for more complicated geometries.
Meh, so you see 2 pritns above you the one on the left is just printed with white silk PLA and took about an hour to print the one on the right is clear PETG and it took 9 hours! So to get the most clear finish one must insure a few things the part must be a 100% solid all the lines have to go one way and the print speed needs to be very slow leading to a lot longer print time.
Also with this method some sides look more clear than others.
I tried another complex model this one usually takes about 6 hours but with the clear it was over 24 hours of print time, looks cool but far form the desires glass effect.
Finally we get into the PVB bit, So I tried my hand at it but like briefly mentioned I did not have success, I was misting the parts with 99% alcohol and it was doing the trick but was fairly labour intensive also I messed some of them up, I was using painters tape thinking it would be a less sticky surface as the PVB gets super sticky when you apply the alcohol until it dries, Now I realize parchment paper would preform better but that's still not a great method.
I realised vapour smoothing would be the best bet, I was looking into getting a custom chamber made so I could control and collect the alcohol fumes for later use I was quoted a price but a glass blower but after a long while they reached back and said it would be way more than the original quote, I was not too happy about it and don't want to risk all this money for something that may not even turn out so I opted for the DIY route sure the setup is not going to be nearly as good but should get the job done and could be a good proof of concept before I look into getting something better that will be way more expensive.
So right below is what I got instead, all sourced from a near by dollar store, some glass containers
and a tackle box, I needed hooks as well as fishing line so I had to go with the whole box.
So the idea here will be to set up some fishing line with a hook so I can suspend it inside the sealed glass jars, I will then add alcohol to the bottom and maybe even get a hot plate or use the printers hot bed to expedite the evaporation process.
I will also have to modify the models adding a sacrificial loop for hook to be able to grab on to the part while it's getting its' vapour bath, after the process I will cut it off.
Unfortunately even if the process is a success clarity wise, which I am confident it will be I will more than likely have to go back to the drawing board to change the design to a compensate for the potential material deformation from this process, I will have to insure the capsules still hold after and that may require making them a bit thicker.
