Hello, How are you today
Welcome to my #Taco-Tuesdays post, a foodie post in our beloved #freecompliments community. Today I am sharing you about one of Indonesian traditional food which is called Uritan. Initially there were two drafts of Uritan posts, one for Bahasa Indonesian and another one is this for Taco Tuesdays, but after some consideration I choose to combine both into one post.
WHAT IS URITAN
Uritan is a Chicken Egg, but it is not an Egg yet. It is a premature Chicken egg you can get by slaughtering hens. These immature eggs have not developed any shell yet, and they looked like a mix of eggyolk and white yolk with some visible arteries.
They came in rounded ball shape, and mostly they have a lot more like ball, not oval like what an Egg should be. The size are very variative, from big to small, but rarely you will find Uritan as big as an ordinary egg.
However the term of Uritan itself doesn't limit the food on that under developed egg only, sometime if you order Uritan, they came with some intestine-like offal, that is Oviduct. Whether they are the ball shape only, or ball shape with oviduct, or oviduct only, all called as Uritan.
URITAN AS MAIN DISH
It's a rare sight seeing uritan sold or served as main dish, but some people have it that way. I am sharing you guys this Uritan, served in form of soup.
I found this dish in one of traditional chicken soup outlet. They put the menu on their wall, and you can see the third one is URITAN.
NASI SOP PISAH URITAN, it means you ask for RICE (NASI) and SOP URITAN (URITAN SOUP) with both separated (PISAH) on different bowl / plate. It was 18,000 rupiah or around 1,15 $HBD.
From those two shots above, let me explain to you... The Yellowish one is the premature or underdeveloped Egg, they have a colouring like a mix of egg yolk and white yolk. The white cut, which looks like a intestine, is actually an Oviduct cut.
Older genertion people do not differ those two, both called as Uritan. That's why younger generation sometime confused about this food when they first time having it.
URITAN AS SIDE DISH
Uritan itself is more widely known as a side dish. they usually served as some snacks, or some mix in other food. They usually served in a skewer, cooked together with other offals or chicken skins.
I had an Uritan as a side dish of my chicken soup last month. You can see Uritan is more rounded ball shape than the egg on my soup, the egg is the white one on the left side.
If I have to choose whether I go with Uritan as my main dish or my side dish, I prefer to have it as my side dish. It has a more rich flavor than having it boiled as the main of the soup.
LESSER PEOPLE GO WITH URITAN
The current trend shows that people are leaving Uritan, they choose to go with other thing such as Quail Egg. Let me show you how Qual Eggs look like:
The skewers are the Quail Eggs, while the rounded in the middle are actually Potato Croquettes. People prefer having an egg, or some smaller eggs rather than having Uritan that they know it is an egg that has not become an egg yet.
Uritan is very nutritious, it has high content of minerals, vitamin B12 and Vitamin A. It is good for sick people because it promotes immune system. However it is not recommended by many people because basically they see it not as an egg but more like an offal. As Offal, I think we all know, it will perceived to have high fat and high cholesterol which a longer and frequent consumption will give us many health problems.
I like Uritan because I like egg in general. The taste of Uritan is a bit similar to an egg but they have different taste and texture. So if you are an egg lover, you should try uritan.
Uritan is different with a food called Balot. Balot is already in form of half developed embryo, you can see the duck shape and feel it when bite and crunch it in your mouth. Uritan is like an egg yolk but it is more dense and sticky.
