This video is my 40-minute playthrough of PICO-8's Puzzle game Lab Cat. The game follows a Cat as s/he goes through multiple experiments called Trail in which s/he pushes around boxes through corners and portals to ascend to the next level.
Cat Lab is simple and creative. Every Trial (level) is different. I had to think really hard to solve some puzzle. I ended up skipping one, though. As I went through the experiments, more mechanics kept being introduced, like Barriers in Trail 8, and in Lasers in Trail 12.
When I started I wanted a play a few levels to test the game, but I got way into it, I reached Trial 20 before I stopped playing. The Cat is cute. It doesn't really matter what the protagonist of this puzzle game was, but I'm glad they decided on a cat instead of the typical guinea pig.
I stopped playing after getting stuck at Trial 20. I spent almost 10 minutes trying to figure it out, but I gave up in the end. I'm pretty sure the solution would be easy, and I just missed it. I solved most other Trials in one minute or below, so I consider it a success.
PICO-8 is a Fantasy Console. It's a multi platform application that tries to emulate the limitations of the 16-bit era generation of video games. Despite the limitations, many great games have been developed for PICO-8, and I discover them from time to time. I recorded this Cat Lab playthrough on a Linux (PopOS) laptop.
