Mario Kart 64 Sees Port to PC Bringing Tons of Improvements

in Hive Gaming12 days ago

There is a trend developing in gaming where classic titles that were once console exclusives are getting native PC ports. This is done by reverse engineering, the original game, often via a decompiler and some VERY knowledgeable developers massaging the code to run on PCs without an emulator. The latest title to begin making waves with a native PC port is Mario Kart 64 from the Nintendo 64 console. It is called SpaghettiKart and it looks amazing.

The Original Was Fun, This Release Adds More

There is no denying that the original Mario Kart 64 was a fun game. It was the first game that made me want a Nintendo 64, though I wouldn’t get one until years later. I played the demo cart at Walmart A LOT, who remembers when Walmart had games on demo?

SpaghettiKart brings 120 frames per second at 4K resolutions with full widescreen support. On top of better graphics, you are no longer limited to the N64 controller, you can use any controller that your PC recognizes now.

According to Kotaku, SpaghettiKart also allows players to adjust the aggressiveness of the computer controller racers.

Custom Tracks

No, not music tracks, though those are probably easily changed, here I mean custom racetracks to run around on. SpaghettiKart allows the creation of custom racetracks.

This alone is an amazing addition and will add tons of hours of fun to the base game.

All in all, Nintendo is probably stuck on this as far as using it off the Internet. Considering you will need to provide any copyrighted assets to play, Nintendo really does not have much legal room to stand. They might be able to combat over reused game code but that may be shot down if the Sega vs Accolade case were to come into play (basically saying reverse engineering is legal).

It would be great to see someone create assets to replace the Nintendo ones using the SpaghettiKart engine. I understand that is a massive undertaking but it is fun to dream.

Either way, if you have even a mild interest in the Mario Kart 64 game world, grab SpaghettiKart, put it away somewhere. Just because it is here today, doesn’t mean it will be tomorrow.

This looks really nice, although I'm worried that Nintendo might take action against this project. Excellent info as usual my friend.

Thank you. With this one, I honestly don't think Nintendo has much ground to stand on but that has not stopped companies from suing projects into bankruptcy - remember Sony vs Bleem?

The way they are releasing these ports seems to be well within the legal precedent set by Sega vs Accolade. I wish there was a similar project for the Sega Saturn, there are a bunch of gams on that console that were hindered due to how complicated Sega made the hardware.

This game is amazing, a classic one, I think the changes give it a plus. I'd like to try this release. Thanks for sharing 🙌

You are welcome. I agree, the changes and upgrades they made certainly do make it an even better looking game.

There's talk of a PC port for Mario Kart 64, but I wonder how they would solve the multiplayer issue, since it's local, or rather family-oriented, where you can connect four controllers to the same console.

Personally, this is the best Mario Kart, and many people disagree with me, thanks to the Wii and Switch 2 games, but Mario Kart 64 has an originality and playability that is so endearing and entertaining that it can create team alliances or destroy friendships.

Mario Kart 64 is a great game to share with your friends and family, a simple game but with a lot of excitement haha. Good post!!

The multiplayer is a good question. Nothing I could find had anything about multiplayer, hopefully it includes over the Internet options. I don't have a copy of Mario Kart 64 to use to get the assets to test this release out, unfortunately.

Wow! It's amazing that Mario Kart 64 has arrived on PC. I've played a lot of Super Mario games, but only on PSP. But with Mario Kart 64 coming to PC, I can now play it even better. Thanks for sharing.

You are welcome. Man, the PSP, that brings back memories. I have two, a 2000 and a 3000, I love both of them though since upgrading my phone, I don't play them as much as I used to (I used to download YouTube videos and watch them on my PSP in bed at night or on my lunch at my day job).

Wow, thanks I'm glad you had a PSP too. I used to play a lot on PSP, but unfortunately the one I had broke, and I started playing on my phone and laptop.

While Sony pulled the plug on the PSP seemingly too soon, it did make a wonderful impact on many gamers like us.

I agree with that, my friend.

I think the upgrades like 120 FPS, 4K resolution, and custom tracks have taken the Mario Kart experience to a whole new level.

I definitely agree. I think it is wonderful that they are doing this with Nintendo 64 titles too, a platform that was really only hindered due to the cartridges so games didn't look as good as they could have back then.
