We Visited Bruno's Tonight

in Eating Out3 days ago

Tonight I took the family out to our local Italian restaurant which is literally less than 5 minutes from the house. The local restaurant has changed ownership which is great news as the food has gone up many notches from where it was. I promised the owner I would come and sit down and try the menu and every time I popped in collecting take away I kind of felt a little guilty. The place is very busy so this is a good sign the locals are supporting the business and the food is what is drawing everyone in.

I have trained my family to take photographs first before they just dig in much to the amusement of the owner who wanted to know what that was all about. I told him this is for my blog on HIVE and he said next time to do the tour and watch the food being prepared in the kitchen. I may just take him up on that next month. Again this was no special occasion and was me just saying lets have an evening out for once. I tend to do most of the cooking and this was more a night off for me.

Granny had the crumbed pork chops and vegetables which is not something you find on menus in SA. As soon as she read this on the menu she was already sold and said that there was at least half a dozen other items she would like to try. The chops were great and were extremely juicy so next time I may be tempted ,but would skip the rice and want something else.

My daughter had the lamb shank which was again a large portion and even though it was delicious I would give this a skip personally as I know I could do better. Also I am not really a fan of mixed vegetables and guess I am just a little fussy.

Yes I was the only one who had a pizza and it was no diet sized portion either and was a fillet steak calzone with peppadews and a few other ingredients. There is no ways I could finish this and had to bring some home which is saying something as I can normally eat quite a bit.

The portion of Hake looked good and was probably the healthiest option out of all 4 dishes and even though I like fish I would not order this at an Italian restaurant. Try something different and be adventurous is how I tend to think eating something you would not normally make at home.

I am glad I fulfilled my promise to the owner and we will be back again as it is important to support the local businesses around you. This place stayed open during lockdowns under the old owners and was more of a secret bar for the locals. I think this affected the food as drink became the most important part of the business and was no longer seen as a restaurant that served alcohol, but a place that served alcohol and maybe some food.

And if you are wondering how much this all was which included 2 starters and a pizza for the grand kids plus drinks and tip it was $75 which I think is reasonable value for a local eatery.

Other than calzone none of the food looks like the Italian food I am used to in USA. Maybe what you have over there is a more authentic Italian food...

Is that a picture of the restaurant staff at the top?

Most of the food is some type of pasta but they do other foods as well catering for everyone. I would not say this is authentic Italian food besides the obvious dishes.

Have you thought about taking a tour with the restaurant owner in the kitchen like he suggested?

The dishes looks so nice and yummy which am pretty sure you all enjoyed the meal.
