Last Friday at work, I had an amazing experience of having Nihari at the famous Zahid Nihari Restaurant for lunch. Usually, we go to nearby places for lunch on Fridays after Friday prayers but our head of IT has some different plans and he decided to perform Friday prayers at Alamgir Mosque and then will go to Zahid Nihari Restaurant.

I was a bit hesitant and asked to change the plan as it will take a lot of time and this could disturb our workings but he convinced us that it won’t take that long. Finally, as planned, we went to Alamgir Mosque for Friday prayers and then went to Zahid Restaurant. Last time, I went to this restaurant was like ages ago and that was with my Father as he is very fond of Niharis.

What is NIHARI?
Nihari is a slow-cooked stew that originated in the Indian subcontinent. It is typically made with meat, often beef or lamb, and a mixture of spices. The slow cooking process allows the meat to become tender, and the spices impart a rich and flavorful broth. Nihari is often served with naan or rice.

The dish is known for its aromatic blend of spices, including garam masala, ginger, and other flavorful ingredients. It is traditionally enjoyed as a hearty and comforting meal, often served during breakfast or lunch in some regions. Each region may have its variations of the dish, and it is a popular choice in Pakistani and North Indian cuisines.

We ordered two plates of Nihari and it was well served with hot Naans. Honestly, I will not just appreciate the taste of Nihari as it is incomplete with those hot served Naans. Restaurant was full of people, hungry and impatiently waiting for Nihari to be served. People are so crazy of their taste. The best part is they are offering unlimited refills of gravy. It is a unique business idea which we discussed while having lunch. They are covering the amount of refills of gravy in the main order and the number of Naans which are consumed. No doubt, it is hard to stop your hand from eating this Nihari. You just keep on eating and eating until it reaches your throat hehehe

We really enjoyed our lunch ta Zahid restaurant. It is one of the famous Nihari spot in Karachi. Later, we had a cup of tea at Mahmood Restaurant and spent a bit of time discussing on various topics. Surprisingly, we were back in office at the same time we used to get back when we have lunch nearby and the reason was the fast serving at Zahid restaurant, they don’t take much time in serving their customers. I was happy to eat Zahid Nihari after a long time and it was quite a good experience.
