RE: I Thought They're Goji Berries!

in HiveGarden3 months ago

I've never seen this but I've tried a similar fruit before! I don't remember the species, but it was also in the genus Carissa! In Mexico, they simply call it 'carissa'. The fruit is sweet but sour as well and actually, when it's ripe it looks exactly the berries in your photos! They do not turn purple. Other differences from your variety are that this plant grows into a small shrub and the fruits are kiwi sized. It is native to southern coastal Africa, if I remember correctly. It is a good fruit for people with diabetes. This family of fruits must be a medicinal powerhouse!

Sort:

Did the fruit you've eaten didn't have a bitter taste? Kiwi sized? That's quite big! Yes, I read they're good for diabetic people and also lowers blood pressure. If I can find a way to get rid of its bitterness I'd eat them as a snack. 😆

Yes, it was bitter! What if all this time we were eating the unripe fruit? Maybe it's also supposed to look purple...

I found an old picture I had taken of a flower of the plant. It's when we were staying at a seaside hotel. All these bushes were in bloom and a bird liked to pollinate the flowers with its long, thin beak.
