If it wasn't all the construction garbage I would have guessed it was people illegal dumping, but it sounds like it is a combination of both. Hopefully if they ever do continue development, they will try to get it cleaned up. Maybe it's out of the way for the garbage truck to go there when there are no houses yet.
it must be one of those things that became too much trouble to police and it is just understood that whoever takes over the land it will be their responsibility to beautify it. I do know that there are several blocks of condos and apartments that are gated and nobody gets in there even though it is one of the best direct routes through a place. The fear might be that it would turn into a dump site as well
Yeah, you are probably right. The way you talk Vietnam is fairly safe, so I am guessing the gated community thing is more of a status symbol than anything else?
It's hard to say. Almost all places have secure parking and night security guards so I'm not going to say that this place is perfectly safe. I did have a bicycle stolen that was outside all night after all. I think the gated communities likely are primarily status but also to prevent the roaming salepeople with speakers on their motorbikes and cars from running around the streets and noise polluting, also so it doesn't become a drag-racing strip for motorbike punks. I can't imagine that it is meant to keep out anything violent. From what I have seen there is virtually zero violent crime here at all.
Ah, okay, so it's more nuisance control that anything. That's a fair assessment. It's funny about the sales person thing. My wife and I never really get visitors, so whenever someone knocks on the door or rings the doorbell we are always a bit WTF because we know it's probably a sales person.
